We made it. From June – October, we had 17 weeks of camp. It was hard, it was fun, it was stressful, it was rewarding. Here’s what we learned and what’s next…
I want to express my gratitude to everyone who was a part of a successful camp season. Given the circumstances, my crew rose above to provide a safe a fun summer for the kids in our community. Parents did a great job keeping sick kiddos home. The kids adapted to difficult situations. It truly takes a village.
Reflection 1: 0 Campers or staff got sick! The most important ting this year. Again, a true community effort.
Reflection 2: Leadership. We had 18 teens complete our Leadership Development Program. 3 of them were able to do some coaching this summer. We also had 8 coaches on staff who went through the program in prior years. Some awesome future coaches came through this year!
Reflection 3: Adversity gives us a chance to create! Speaking of our coaches, they did an amazing job coaching kids during a pandemic, coming with energy everyday, and adapting to all the restrictions we had to keep us safe. One week, the lock for our equipment trailer broke, and we had a successful day with next to no equipment! Now that’s impressive.
Reflection 4: Kids are extremely resilient! By mid-way through the summer, there were very few complaints about masks or social distancing. Kudos for the campers adapting to the situation too.
Don’t get me wrong, I am very ready for this to end. But I know we can do what we need to do for as long as it takes!
